FACT Empowerment Profile

The FACT Empowerment area serves families who reside in Adair County.  Most of the demographic information is based on county statistics.  All figures unless otherwise noted reflect only Adair County and therefore understate the needs.  Adair County includes the following four school districts:

  • Adair Casey Community School District
  • Nodaway Valley Community School District
  • Orient-Macksburg Community School District
  • West Central Valley Community School District

Population
Adair County is a non-metropolitan county in southwest Iowa. Adair County is comprised of seven incorporated communities and their surrounding rural areas. From 1990 to 2000, Adair County’s population decreased 2.0%. It is forecasted to decrease another 5% by 2010.

Diversity
Adair County is predominately white at 97.9% and the state of Iowa is 90.6%

Education
The 2007 high school graduation rate is 97.0% compared to 87.8% in 2000.  The 2007 state of Iowa rate is 90.5%. (2007 Iowa Kids Count)

The percentage of 8th grade students who are proficient in math on the Iowa Basic Skills is 76.9%. The highest in the state is Bremer County at 88.0% and the state of Iowa is 75.6%.

Adair County’s free and reduced lunch eligibility rate in 2007-2008 was 29.2%; it has risen to 32.4% in for the 2008-2009 school year.  The state rate is 34.1%.

Poverty
According to 2007 statistics from Iowa Workforce Development and the U.S. Census Bureau, Adair County had 837 people in poverty, of that, 215 children were under the age of 18 were in poverty, and 126 children ages 5-17 are in poverty.

Unemployment rate
According to Iowa Workforce Development, unemployment rate in April of 2008 was 4.4% in Adair County compared to the unemployment rate as of April 2009 is at 5.2%.  The highest in the state is Jasper County at 7.0% with the lowest being Johnson and Shelby County at 3.0%. The state rate is 6.2%.

Other Descriptive Information
There is one major factory, Cardinal Glass, that employs many of Adair County’s workforce. Aside from this factory the county is primarily a farming community. Because of the County’s proximity to Des Moines, a number of its workforce travel to the city for employment.

Adair County is the only county in Iowa that does not have a Head Start.

Adair County has two state licensed child care center and one school based child care center for a total of three child care centers.

Adair County has a less than full time Department of Human Services office.

Adair County has a hospital, but does not deliver babies.

Adair County has interstate 80 that on the north edge of the County.
